Why most online yoga does not work and what we do differently

The vast majority of online yoga content on apps, YouTube, and streaming platforms consists of recorded videos you follow alone. There is nothing inherently wrong with recorded content for familiarity and inspiration. But it has a fundamental limitation: it cannot see you. It cannot notice that you are rounding your lumbar spine in a forward fold, that your front knee is collapsing inward in Warrior I, or that you are holding your breath during a challenging posture. It cannot adapt its pacing to your level or modify a posture for an injury you mentioned at the start.

A recorded video is a demonstration. Our live online classes are teaching. The distinction is significant: in a class with a teacher who is watching and responding, alignment errors are corrected before they become habits, difficult postures are offered appropriate modifications, and the class is calibrated to the energy and capacity of the actual people in it not the imagined average student the video was designed for.

We keep online groups strictly limited typically capped at 6 to 8 practitioners for the same reason we keep in-person classes small. A virtual yoga teacher who has twenty students on screen cannot give genuine attention to any of them. Our live online classes maintain the intimate group sizes necessary to provide personalized alignment cues and safe, guided home practice.

The quality of the teaching in our online classes is the same as the quality of teaching in our Rishikesh centre. The teachers, the curriculum, the approach to small groups, and the standards for alignment instruction are identical. Location is not a barrier to a serious yoga practice absence of real instruction is. We address the latter.

The yoga styles we teach in live online classes

All styles taught in our Rishikesh centre are available online. Each translates differently to the video format we are direct about what works best for which situations.

Hatha Yoga ideal online

Hatha translates exceptionally well to online instruction. The slower, held postures give the teacher time to observe alignment, give verbal corrections, and explain why each posture is structured as it is. For beginners particularly, the deliberate pace of Hatha online produces results comparable to in-person instruction. The majority of our beginner online students start with Hatha.

About Hatha

Vinyasa Yoga good for established students

Vinyasa works well online for students who already know the basic postures and are familiar with Ujjayi breath. The teacher can observe the quality of transitions and call corrections during flow sequences. For complete beginners, we recommend starting with Hatha before joining Vinyasa online classes, as the pace leaves less room for detailed explanation.

About Vinyasa

Yin Yoga excellent online

Yin yoga is among the most effective styles for online instruction. The long holds mean the teacher has ample time to guide students into appropriate positions, check in on sensation levels, and provide detailed anatomical context for each posture. The meditative quality of Yin also suits the home environment well students are already in a quiet space.

About Yin

Meditation ideal online

Guided meditation classes are among the most naturally suited to online instruction. The teacher's voice is the primary teaching tool, and the home environment quiet, private, familiar is often more conducive to meditation than a studio setting. Our online meditation classes include Q&A time so students can discuss their practice directly with the teacher.

About Meditation

Pranayama very good online

Pranayama instruction online allows the teacher to observe the student's posture, listen to breath sounds, and watch the quality of breath movement in the belly and chest. The detailed verbal instruction that pranayama requires translates well to video. We teach pranayama both as standalone online sessions and as a component of online yoga classes.

About Pranayama

Private classes maximum impact online

One-on-one online private yoga classes give the teacher their full attention on a single student. For specific goals, injury rehabilitation, preparation for a retreat or teacher training, or students who want genuinely personalised instruction, online private sessions are highly effective. The teacher sees only you and can observe every aspect of your practice in detail.

Private Classes

Joining an online class from start to your first session

You reach out and tell us about yourself

WhatsApp or call us. Tell us your yoga experience, which style interests you, and where you are in the world. If you have any health considerations that might affect what we recommend, share those too. This conversation takes five minutes and shapes everything that follows.

We match you to the right class and schedule

Based on your experience level, location, and schedule, we recommend the right class type and find a time that works. We are not running a drop-in platform with fixed schedules we build the schedule around the students who are actually joining. Scheduling takes a direct conversation because it requires knowing both sides.

Technical check and brief orientation

Before your first session, we confirm your technical setup camera angle, audio, lighting, and connection on our secure video platform (typically Zoom) so the teacher can see you clearly. We also share what to prepare (mat, space, props if needed) and what to expect from the live virtual format. First-time students receive a brief orientation call or message from their teacher.

Your first session and ongoing development

The first session focuses on establishing your foundation the teacher assesses your current posture, movement patterns, and breath quality, and begins from where you actually are rather than where a beginner is assumed to be. Subsequent sessions build progressively based on what you have demonstrated and what you are ready for next.

On online teaching

The screen between student and teacher does not diminish the teaching if the teacher is genuinely watching. What diminishes the teaching is a teacher who stops watching because the technology makes it easy not to.

Our teachers watch every student in every online class. That is the commitment that makes the format work.

What students ask before joining their first online class

We use Zoom for all our live online classes. It offers the most stable connection for group video and allows the teacher to clearly see all students simultaneously in gallery view, which is essential for providing real-time alignment feedback.

We strictly cap our online group classes at 6 to 8 practitioners. This limit is non-negotiable, as it is the maximum number of students a teacher can effectively monitor on a screen while providing the level of personalized attention and safety our school requires.

When you reach out to begin, please share details about any injuries or conditions. Depending on the severity, we will either recommend a suitable group class where the teacher can offer specific modifications, or we may suggest starting with private sessions to establish a safe practice baseline.

Internet stability is the biggest practical challenge with online classes. A minimum of 10 Mbps download speed is recommended for reliable video. If your connection is unstable, a wired ethernet connection is significantly more reliable than WiFi. If you experience interruption during a class, your teacher will continue teaching the group while you reconnect; you will not fall behind. For students with consistently unreliable connections, we can discuss alternative arrangements but most places with reasonable internet access can support our classes without difficulty.

Yes this is not optional in our classes. The camera is what makes the class a class rather than a webinar. Without being able to see you, your teacher cannot correct your alignment, notice when you are struggling, or adapt the instruction for your specific situation. Students who turn their cameras off lose the primary benefit of a live class over a recorded video. If you have a specific privacy concern about camera use, discuss it with us before joining we can sometimes work with unusual situations but the default is camera-on throughout.

Yes. Many of our students begin with online classes, build a foundation, and then visit Rishikesh for a retreat or intensive program often with the same teacher they have been working with online. The teacher who has taught you online for months already knows your practice, your patterns, and your development history, which makes in-person work significantly more productive. This continuity is one of the distinctive advantages of our approach we are not a platform where you are anonymous, but a school where your teachers know who you are.

Standard group sessions run for 60 to 75 minutes. This includes a proper opening, main practice, pranayama component, and full savasana. We do not shorten sessions to accommodate scheduling issues if a class has 60 minutes, savasana happens. Private sessions can be adjusted to your preferred duration (45, 60, or 90 minutes) and are booked accordingly. Meditation-only sessions are typically 45 to 60 minutes.
